Redtwist Theatre
(formerly AWT) stages the first off-loop Chicago production of
this Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play. A taut, meticulous
thriller of
moral ambiguity, Doubt
features Jan Ellen Graves as
Sister Aloysius, and
C. Sean Piereman as
Father Flynn. Greg Kolack,
fresh from his acclaimed
direction of columbinus,
takes the reins for this instant classic.
The Play
In her review of the
Broadway production for
The New York Theatre Wire, Lucy Komisar noted that Doubt was “a multi-layered,
riveting, and subtle story with two messages. First, if there's a
possibility that children are being abused, a moral person must act,
even at the risk of targeting an innocent man. But the more moral a
person is, the more gnawing and prickly can be the doubt. And second,
the male Catholic hierarchy is so protective of its own, that it will
invariably err on the other side of that doubt.” Shanley’s masterstroke
with this play is the painstaking construction, by Sister Aloysius, of
a seemingly airtight case against a parish priest, and yet...
