A
relentlessly
intelligent piece of work, this play zeroes in on a microscopic slice
of a cosmic event. Set in the late 1930s with the inexorable reality of
Nazi Germany and the coming war, a beautiful wife in Brooklyn suddenly
and mysteriously is unable to walk. Amidst this powerful set-up, Miller
turns his glare of truth on the couple’s lengthy sexual dysfunction. He
probes with sublime compassion into their frayed union, while
forcefully establishing the consequences of denial and repression. This
is an eviscerating drama from America’s foremost playwright.

Michael Colucci (director) is the Artistic Director
of the AWT and has been acting, producing, directing, and teaching in
Chicago for nearly twenty years. He is a long-standing member of SAG,
AFTRA, and Equity, and founded the Actors Workshop training center in
Old Town in 1991, and the AWT in 1994 as an itinerant theatre company,
finally and happily landing in Edgewater in 2003, where the inaugural
show was a critically acclaimed production of Praying Small.
His favorite acting experiences are as the Father in Praying Small at AWT, Dave/Bob in Beau Jest at Victory Gardens with
Roslyn Alexander (who can be seen along with Sam Perry in AWT's next
show, The Last Yankee), and The American Clock at Court Theatre
in the '80s, which received three Jeff nominations including best
ensemble (and this rarity can also be seen after lo these many years in
AWT's current season of mostly recent Arthur Miller).
Special experiences as a director include Praying Small by Clifford Morts, Otherwise Engaged by Simon Gray, The Monogamist by Christopher Kyle,
and this present production of Broken
Glass which features the finest collection of actors with whom
Michael has worked, including his favorite actor (and wife) Jan Ellen
Graves, who will be taking the female lead in The Last Yankee, which he will also
direct. His favorite career role, however, is that of a teacher here at
the AWT. |
