PRESS  RELEASE

The Beauty Queen of Leenane
by Martin McDonagh
opens at the
Actors Workshop Theatre
Wednesday, May 31st, at 8pm

A darkly funny and explosive drama about co-dependence, cruelty, and last chances revolving around a mother and daughter as they cope with dead end lives in a remote corner of Ireland where nothing ever happens.

About the Play
AWT’s production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane combines the perfect blend of director (Trudie Kessler, is the former head of DePaul’s  voice and speech department and upcoming Chair of Performance), lead actress (taking the title role is ensemble-member Jacqueline Grandt, one of Chicago’s hidden treasures), and uniquely intimate space to capture the biting musicality of these trapped Irish souls. Written in 1996, The Beauty Queen of Leenane performed to sold out crowds at London's Royal Court Theatre and won four Tony Awards for its Broadway production.

About the Author
Brazenly unsentimental in his dissection of these teetering hearts, Martin McDonagh, a scorched-earth young Irish writer, has as much potential to transform theater as any dramatist of the past few decades. He combines intelligence, craft, raw power, and frightening humor, probing the depths of the human soul. The Beauty Queen of Leenane was McDonagh's first stage play, written at age twenty-five.
